If you think that reaching the semifinals of the first two majors of the year would be the only highlights of Jelena Jancovic’s year, you’d be wrong. The hard hitting Serb also loves the finer things in life like beautiful designer clothes and extravagant shoes. So much so, that she started her own company!
Jankovic, who reached the Roland Garros semifinals for the second straight year earlier this month, is currently ranked No. 2 in the world behind top-ranked compatriot Ana Ivanovic.
She sat down with Tennis Week recently to discuss her season as well as her dapper ambitions.
Tennis Week: How has your year gone so far?
Jelena Jankovic: I haven’t started this season very well physically. But still reached the Australian semis and Miami final. But in the beginning of the year, I still feel like I wasn’t able to produce the same level of tennis that I have last year. So, I’ve been struggling in finding the right coach, the right balance, and the right fitness trainer, just to give myself an opportunity to be consistently mentally and physically tough. I want to become a better player still. There’s still room to improve!
Tennis Week: And yet you’re one of very few players who seems to really smile and enjoy your game…
Jelena Jankovic: I really do enjoy the game, and I think my emotions come through. Fans see when I’m happy or angry. I live in the moment and I don’t want to change. It’s just part of my personality and I simply don’t like to be like anyone else.
Tennis Week: How did you come out with clothing line?
Jelena Jankovic: I decided to make a little clothing line over last year. I’ve put on a little show, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to be there. But it’s a fun little hobby, especially when you think of life after tennis. I love mixing and matching, and experimenting with the clothes that show off your best attributes. I think it’s very important to look nice, dress well, and be feminine..
Tennis Week: What’s the process of designing clothes for you?
Jelena Jankovic: Well, my mom used to be a designer and I know in my head what I like. So, I start drawing sketches and she would guide me a little bit. But it’s still my line, but I’m glad I have opportunity to produce it because mom always wanted to make it for herself as well. It’s cool thing, but mainly I have opportunity to wear my own clothes. Why wear others, when you have your own label?
Tennis Week: Do you have obsessions for other brands?
Jelena Jankovic: I love Dolce and Gabanna and Cavalli. I even like BeBe. I’m obsessed with Gucci, Louis Vuitton bags and shoes! I just bought a $4,000 limited edition Vuitton bag. I love a little bit of everything! You should see my closet…In few years, I will probably have full house filled with clothes!
Tennis Week: Everyone has a shopping routine. What’s yours?
Jelena Jankovic: I reward myself before I start tournament. I have this motto. If you’ll spend, you’ll get more. If you’ll be cheap, money will not come your way in the end of the tournament!
Tennis Week: Would you ever model?
Jelena Jankovic: I’ll have to train! It’s like a model who’ll come to tennis court. She’ll be a train wreck after hitting few good balls. Fashion Week is for real. These people watch your every single move. So, I’ll be conscious of course and I’ll have to train for it properly!
