Roger Federer will add a new title to his resume this summer: Father.
The second-ranked Swiss announced today his long-time girlfriend, Mirka Vavrinec, is pregnant. Mirka is expecting the couple's first child this summer.
Federer formally announced the news on his web site, Roger Federer.com, today.
"I also have some really awesome news to share with all of you: Mirka and I are excited to let you know that we will be parents this summer!" Federer posted on his web site. "Mirka is pregnant and we are so happy to be starting a family together. This is a dream come true for us. We love children and we are looking forward to being parents for the first time. Mirka is feeling great and everything is going well."
The couple's relationship is rooted in tennis.
In his Olympic debut at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Federer fell to Tommy Haas, 6-3, 6-2, in the semifinals and lost the bronze medal match to Arnaud Di Pasquale, 6-7(5), 7-6(7), 3-6. Federer did not leave Sydney a loser, however, he began his relationship with former WTA Tour player Mirka in Sydney. They will celebrate their ninth anniversary together this August.
