Robert Kendrick earned international attention when he came within two points of shocking second-seeded Rafal Nadal at Wimbledon. But Kendrick's greatest exposure may have become in Washington, D.C. when his good friend James Blake pulled down his pants.
The American qualifier used his serve-and-volley skills to seize a two-set lead over two-time Roland Garros champion Rafael Nadal in the second round of Wimbledon. Kendrick was within two points of completing one of the most shocking upsets in recent Wimbledon history, but Nadal fought back for a 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-7(2), 5-7, 4-6, victory and went on to reach the Wimbledon final.
The 26-year-old Kendrick possesses a potent first serve and can back it up with versatile volleys. His game is well-suited for grass, but interestingly, Kendrick's lone title this season came on the clay courts of Forest Hills where he defeated Cecil Mamiit, 6-2, 6-2, to win the Forest Hills Challenger.
After his heart-breaking Wimbledon loss, Kendrick beat 2005 finalist Vince Spadea and Russia's Igor Kunitsyn to reach the Newport final where he suffered a humbling 6-0, 6-0 setback to Scotland's Andy Murray. The northern California native has the opportunity to avenge his first loss of the season when he meets the 17th-seeded Murray in the opening round of the U.S. Open. The match was scheduled to immediately follow the Gael Monfils-Michael Russell match on the Grandstand, but rain has postponed the start of play.
Tennis Week contributing writer Scoop Malinowski, who like Kendrick has perfected the slice forehand approach, caught up with Kendrick in the player lounge on opening day of the U.S. Open. In this Biofile, Kendrick reveals his indecent exposure episode which came courtesy of Blake, who his best friends on tour are and why he does not need a telephone booth to transform himself into Superman every year.
