Croatia continued its Davis Cup mastery of the United States last weekend. Playing without Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick on its roster an American team of James Blake, Mardy Fish and twins Mike and Bob Bryan lost on the red clay of Porec to a Croatian squad led by Marin Cilic and Ivo Karlovic.
Tennis Week blogger Brad Gilbert reviews the repercussions of Davis Cup were felt all the way to Newport where serve-and-volley stylist Rajeev Ram, a lucky loser, swept both the singles and doubles titles at the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships. Ram's run prompted visions of a Pete Sampras sighting on the historic grass-court grounds of Newport.
"It seems like Ram has modeled his game exactly like Pete Sampras, even the walk in between points is the same!" Brad writes in his latest blog. "Ram, ranked 180 in the world going into the event, had never came close to winning a tour level singles tournament, and had won all of six tour matches in his career. And then he walks away on Sunday as the singles and doubles champion."
