Jurgen Melzer will lead Austria's charge into Chile in the Davis Cup World Playoffs set for the red clay of Rancagua, September 18-20.
Captain Gilbert Schaller has selected the same squad that represented Austria in its 3-2 loss to host Germany in the World Group first round — Melzer, Stefan Koubek, Alexander Peya and Julian Knowle — as Austria contests a World Group Playoff tie for the sixth straight year. Melzer owns a 9-18 Davis Cup singles record, including a 2-5 singles record in matches contested on clay.
Chile and Austria last met in Davis Cup 50 years ago with the Chileans winning in Vienna. Chile has won both previous Davis Cup meetings between the two natiosn.
Chilean captain Hans Gildemeister has not yet announced his team for the tie. Playing without No. 1 singles starter Fernando Gonzalez, a Chilean team of Nicolas Massu, Paul Capdeville, Guillermo Hormazabal and Hans Podlipnik Castillo was shutout, 5-0, by host Croatia in Porec in the March 6-8th opening round.
Nations have until Tuesday, September 8 to confirm their four-man Davis Cup teams to the ITF for the World Group Play-off ties, which take place on September 18-20th, the same weekend as the World Group semifinals featuring Spain vs Israel and Croatia vs Czech Republic.
