Devvarman, Dent, Spadea Headline Charlottesville Challenger By Tennis Week
Friday, October 23, 2009

You can spend Halloween watching the pros work in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Former University of Virginia standout Somdev Devvarman, Taylor Dent, Vince Spadea and Donald Young are scheduled to headline the upcoming Virginia National Bank Men’s Professional Championship, hosted by The Boar’s Head.

Former NCAA champion Devvarman, who recently earned his career-best ranking of No. 124 in the world, reached his first career ATP Tour final in Chennai in January where he beat Carlos Moya and 25th-ranked Ivo Karlovic before bowing to Marin Cilic in the final. In August, he upset Cilic at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington, DC.  Devvarman qualified for his first Grand Slam singles main draw at the 2009 US Open, losing in the second round to 24th seed Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany.

Dent, who lost to Young in the Calabasas Challenger yesterday, Young and Spadea, co-author of Break Point: The Secret Diary of a Pro Tennis Player, are scheduled to join Kevin Kim, Brendan Evans,  Kevin Anderson, Alex Bogomolv and Scoville Jenkins in the main draw.

Match play for this week-long event will take place on only two courts at The Boar’s Head Sports Club, which means fans can watch both day and night play. Featured evening matches begin at 6 p.m. each night starting Monday, November 2.

"This promises to be an absolutely great week of tennis," Boar’s Head Sports Club tournament director Ron Manila said. "We are so excited to be furthering our relationship with the USTA by bringing our first men’s tournament and hope it is the beginning of another great tradition here."

Qualifying round matches on Saturday, October 31 and Sunday, November 1 will be free and open to the public.  Main draw play, which will include as many as nine matches per day, will feature an all-day admission fee of $7 ($5 for Boar’s Head members).  Tickets may be purchased at the front desk of The Boar’s Head Sports Club each day.
