The women's season is winding down, but Michelle Larcher de Brito continues to make noise.
The 16-year-old Larcher de Brito was named the 2009 Portuguese Female Athlete of the Year at the 14th Gala do Desporto sponsored by the Confederação do Desporto de Portugal (CDP).
Larcher de Brito, ranked No. 115 on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, is an up-and-coming product of the IMG Bollettieri Academy in Bradenton, Fla. She reached the third round of the 2009 French Open as a qualifier in her Grand Slam main draw debut, and advanced to the second round at Wimbledon. She turned pro in February 2007 and achieved her best WTA Tour singles result in 2008 as a quarterfinalist at Tashkent.
