Sam Querrey will start the new year clad in new clothes.
Querrey is changing his stripes. The 24th-ranked Querrey has signed an apparel and shoe endorsement deal with K-Swiss, according to a published report in the SportsBusiness Journal written by Daniel Kaplan.
The second-highest ranked American man behind sixth-ranked Andy Roddick, Querrey has endorsed adidas for the past three years. His contract with adidas expires at the end of this year, so Querrey will make his debut as a K-Swiss player in January during the Australian season.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed though SportsBusiness Journal reports the pact is worth seven figures. Querrey joins fellow American Mardy Fish and Wimbledon semifinalist Tommy Haas as K-Swiss endorsers. Nike, Lacoste and Li Ning were among the companies bidding for Querrey and adidas had the option to match any offer, but opted against it, according to John Tobias, Querrey's agent and President of BEST.
"We are very excited about Sam's new partnership with K-Swiss. We had discussions with several other companies including Nike, Lacoste and Li Ning. Ultimately, adidas had the ability to match any offer and they passed on matching the K-Swiss proposal," Tobias told Tennis Week this morning. "Sam is excited to be with a smaller company where he will join Mardy Fish as the lead endorser in the U.S."
Regarded as the potential successor to Andy Roddick as a future top American man, Querrey posted some of his best results during the North American summer season. Following his five-set loss to Marin Cilic at Wimbledon, Querrey advanced to three consecutive finals — Newport, Indianapolis and Los Angeles — beating Carsten Ball to claim the L.A. title and falling to Fernando Verdasco in the New Haven final prior to the US Open.
K-Swiss has used several of its tennis players — most notably Anna Kournikova, Alona Bondarenko, Vera Zvonareva, Haas and Fish — in ad campaigns and Tobias said the company's willingess to feature Querrey more prominently — as well as incentives should he surpass Roddick as the top-ranked American man — are key components in the partnership.
"While Sam was the highest ranked American singles player to wear adidas, in three years they never really activated their sponsorship through any advertising featuring Sam," Tobias told Tennis Week. "Sam had a tremendous year in 2009 and has clearly established himself and the No. 2 American with the No. 1 spot probably just a year or two away. The deal is a seven figure deal with huge upside should he become the No. 1 ranked American."
Querrey, who grew up in Thousand Oaks, California, next to K-Swiss’ hometown of Westlake Village, holds two ATP titles, most recently clinching the LA Tennis Open title in August 2009.
"Sam is going to be a big part of our brand, nationally and internationally," said K-Swiss Sports Marketing Director, Erik Vervloet. "Not only is he a terrific kid with a huge game, but he also embodies the spirit of K-Swiss’ California sports heritage. We look forward to having Sam with K-Swiss for the remainder of his career."
Querrey said the signing feels like a homecoming.
"I’ve always wanted to be with a brand that I could feel like part of the family," said Querrey. "K-Swiss is truly interested in making the best products for me and involving me in the process. I'm looking forward to working with them and developing the best tennis brand in the world. Besides, I grew up a mile from their headquarters, so I feel like I'm at home with them."
