Vera Zvonareva played much of the season hobbled by an ankle injury. The ninth-ranked Zvonareva will be undergoing minor arthroscopic surgery on her right ankle to remove scar tissue today.
Zvonareva is undergoing the procedure in Rotterdam. It will be performed by Dr. Niek van Dijk. Zvonareva plans to remain in Holland for two weeks for extensive rehab and should be cleared to return to the tennis court in four to five weeks.
The 25-year-old Moscow native opened the season on an 18-2 run, reaching her first Grand Slam singles semifinal at the Australian Open and winning two titles — Pattaya City and Indian Wells — in her first four events. She partnered Victoria Azarenka to capture the Indian Wells doubles title, earning the first singles-doubles tournament sweep of her career.
She suffered the ankle injury in the spring and was forced to withdraw from Rome, Madrid and Roland Garros due to the ankle strain.
